After writing the original A Long Journey Home for Katherine, and then Lalani it seemed only fitting to tell you Jessie’ story as the final story to the series

Jessie Roberts, an impulsive and passionate American, finds herself standing at the rail on Ascot’s opening day among the English aristocracy. Now in her fifties, after the Great War, life has changed and she has promised to fulfil her late husband’s desire to own a racehorse. Jessie is determined to purchase Western Pride, a three-year-old thoroughbred. Outspoken and preferring trousers and cowboy boots, she goes at life in her own way, often finding unwanted troubles, and owning a race horse is no different.
Jessie ‘s best friend, Jake Daniels, a well-to-do Black man, has loved her for years. Always supporting and protecting her on her escapades, no matter how frustrated he has become with her antics or with society keeping them apart. Jessie’s struggle to find Western Pride takes them to California. She reconnects with her childhood friends as she waits to hear from Jake while he searches in Tijuana, Mexico.
Jessie becomes worried when no word comes from Jake. Her suppressed love for him surfaces and makes her realize the need to let go of the hunt for the horse and that sometimes promises can’t always be kept. Her only concern now is to find Jake and make sure he’s safe. She is ready to make a commitment to him and a life together. But will circumstances and desires permit it?
